The Federal Government, in collaboration with FEMADEC Express Limited, a private transport sector, on Tuesday in Abuja, launched 20 buses to convey civil servants in Federal Capital Territory and its environs.

Performing the ceremony, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOCSF), Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, said the Federal Civil Service Bus Scheme, was one priority of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Yemi-Esan said that the aim was to lighten the transportation burden of civil servants within Abuja.

“On assumption of office we were trying to map out strategy to accelerate the attainment of our vision of the new civil service.

“One of the predominant burdens we had was how to speedily achieve the healthier, safer and good working environment for civil servants,” she said.

According to her, the scheme will motivate all civil servants and enhance their productivities in the course of their services.

” For this purpose, the Service Welfare Office in the office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, was given a task to produce a very comprehensive staff welfare programme for immediate implementation.

“This eventually galvanised a number of initiatives, some of which include the acceleration of the Federal Integrated Staff Housing Programme, the procurement and payment of insurance cover for Federal Government’s employees,” she added.

Yemi-Esan said that the initiatives also included payments of backlogs of death benefits and the federal civil service bus scheme.

She said although the pilot phase of the scheme had begun with few vehicles, the scheme would be expanded later.

The HOCSF also gave the assurance that buses would be provided for the physically challenged civil servants in the next phase.

She added that arrangement had been concluded with the private sector to acquire customised buses that would be wheelchair accessible for them.

Earlier in her remarks, Dr Ngozi Onwudiwe, Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office, Office of the HOCSF, said the scheme was a milestone in government’s efforts towards improving the welfare of civil servants in the country.

Represented by Mrs Uchenna Obi, the Director, Federal Integrated Staff Housing (FISH) programme, Onwudiwe, said that the pilot phase would ply six routes.

She listed the routes as: Karu – Jikwoyi – Oronzo – Karshi; (route one); AYA – Nyanya – Mararaba – Ado – Masaka (route two) and Berger – Kado – Gwagwa – Karmo (route three).
