The attention of the Imo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress has been drawn to the statement issued on behalf of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by its Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu postponing the Presidential and National Assembly Elections from today 16th February 2019 to 23rd February 2019.

As a major stakeholder in the democratic process and without prejudice to the statement issued on behalf of our Great Party by its national leadership, we are minded to urge Nigerians registered to vote in Imo State in particular to be patient with the authorities of the Commission as they perfect their programme towards achieving free, fair and credible 2019 round of elections in Nigeria.

That while it is regrettable that the news of the postponement was made rather too close to the commencement of the exercise, we are however persuaded by the somber demeanour and presentation of the Hon. National Chairman that the decision was a difficult but necessary one to take to ensure the ultimate success of the elections. It is more important to finally “get it right”.

We restate also that it is mischievous for opposition elements and fifth columnists to drag our Great Party and our respected leader President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR into the domestic affairs of the Commission that by law is Independent especially when the Electoral Act clearly allows the Commission the discretion to alter dates for elections. The President had relocated to Daura Katsina State for the exercise before the announcement was issued and this connotes a total lack of either collusion or premeditation.

We are all aware of the reported cases of arson on INEC offices and sensitive materials in parts of the country and are of the view that it would be better to conduct the polls on same day all over the country than to have same staggered statewide.

Finally, we urge members of the opposition parties, civil society groups and foreign countries to refrain from unguarded commentaries that can precipitate civil crisis in the country so that the elections can be concluded with the peace of Nigeria guaranteed.

Thank you.
Dated this 16th day of February, 2019.
Signed:
