Real Madrid coasted to a third victory under interim manager Santiago Solari as they put five past Viktoria Plzen. The Czech side were unfortunate to lose 2-1 in the reverse fixture against a Real team short on confidence in the final days of Julen Lopetegui’s reign, but were four down by half-time.
Karim Benzema scored twice, with Casemiro and Gareth Bale also netting before the break for the defending champions, while Toni Kroos added a fifth in the second half. The result lifted Real back to the top of Group G, where they face a battle with Roma for first place.
Own goal seals famous Manchester United comeback win at Juventus
Lorenzo Pellegrini’s first Champions League goal gave Roma a 2-1 win at 10-man CSKA Moscow. Roma led through Kostas Manolas’s header in the fourth minute, but CSKA equalised through Icelandic teenager Arnór Sigurdsson, only for his compatriot Hördor Magnússon to be sent off soon after and Pellegrini won it just before the hour mark.
Carlos Soler had a hand in all three goals as Valencia beat Young Boys 3-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday, keeping their hopes alive of progressing from Group H ahead of Manchester United.
Santi Mina twice gave the Spanish side the lead either side of a Roger Assale equaliser before Soler sealed the win in the second half.
Valencia will meet United in the final group game at the Mestalla on 12 December but the Spanish side must travel to Juventus first and know anything but a victory in Turin would see them eliminated if United defeat Young Boys at Old Trafford.
Lyon blew the chance to keep pace with Manchester City in Group F as they let a 2-0 lead slip against 10-man Hoffenheim. Goals from Nabil Fekir and Tanguy Ndombele were followed by Kasim Nuhu’s red card for the German side, who then improbably hit back through Andrej Kramaric and then Pavel Kaderabek on 90 minutes to force a 2-2 draw.
Robert Lewandowski scored two penalties to give Bayern Munich a 2-0 win over AEK Athens and stay in control of Group E. Ajax took a grip on second place as Dusan Tadic equalised to earn them a valuable 1-1 draw at Benfica.
